Sydney, Australia, Wednesday 6 May 2009: The Australian public have voted Tom Cruise and Amy Winehouse 2009’s "Biggest Tool" and "Biggest Toolette" respectively in the inaugural Fix Awards, hosted by Australia's leading online celebrity and entertainment destination
thefix.com.au.
With close to 25,000 votes cast, Cruise and Winehouse were declared winners of the dubious titles from an eclectic group of 50 local and international celebrity nominees including Kanye West, Gordon Ramsay, Victoria Beckham and Lady Gaga.
Couch jumper Tom Cruise won the title by a landslide, with almost double the votes of not-so-great boyfriend Chris Brown, who took second place. Wacko Jacko limply moonwalked into third place closely followed by hairy-hobo rapper wannabe Joaquin Pheonix.
Meanwhile, the award for Biggest Toolette was claimed by train-wreck Amy Winehouse whose drug-fuelled antics narrowly beat orange heiress Paris Hilton for the accolade. Gold-digging Heather Mills and semi-clothed Disney starlet Miley Cyrus followed in third and fourth place respectively.
Matthew Newton and Natalie Bassingthwaighte were the only Aussie celebs to make the top ten on the male and female leader-board – both coming in at eighth place. Matthew was nominated for his "tirrible iccent" and Natalie for being the SYTYCD hostess without the mostest.
"The Fix has an audience of over 2.6 million Australian unique browsers per month*, which makes it Australia's leading online entertainment destination, and best placed to understand which celebrities Australians respond to," said Kylie Speer, Head of Communication, at The Fix.
"The Biggest Tool and Tool-ette nominees were chosen based on who creates the most discussion with our audience, who the Australian public feels most passionately about and the wild things they’ve done to generate big headlines.
"The Australian public then did the rest, casting a massive 25,000 votes and ultimately declaring Cruise and Winehouse the winners. Their support and enthusiasm for the inaugural Fix Awards is testament to the huge interest our society has with the cult of celebrity and perhaps an even better insight into Australia’s larrikin and ever-present tall-poppy syndrome!" Speer concluded.
The Fix Awards, coined ‘The Oscars for the celeb-obsessed’, also saw eighteen of the best, worst, ugliest and craziest celebrities recognised by The Fix team who gave awards in a variety of categories including ‘Least Dressed Celeb’ (Pamela Anderson); ‘Who Ate All The Pies’ (Oprah Winfrey); ‘The Giant Sunglasses Award’ (Kim Kardashian) and ‘Most Epic Celebrity Rack’ (Selma Hayek).
